Following the completion of my BA in Archaeology and History at NUI Galway in 1999, I was awarded a Faculty Research Fellowship to investigate the prehistoric archaeology of the barony of Clare, north Co. Galway (MA 2001). I returned to Galway as a Government of Ireland (IRCHSS) Research Scholar in 2002 to complete my PhD (2008) on the origins and significance of closely spaced multivallation, an elaborate method of enclosure found on a diverse range of late prehistoric and early medieval monuments in Ireland and other parts of northwest Europe. In addition to almost 15 years involvement in all aspects of archaeological fieldwork and excavation, working in both academic and commercial sectors, I have also conducted geophysical survey at a wide variety of sites in Ireland and abroad since 2002. From 2008 to 2011 I was a research fellow in the Department of Archaeology, NUI Galway, during which time I contributed to undergraduate teaching in the department and worked on a range of collaborative research projects involving archaeological and geophysical survey at sites such as Tara, Co. Meath (with the Discovery Programme), Dún Ailinne, Co. Kildare; Rathcroghan, Co. Roscommon; and the early Columbanian foundation at Annegray, Haute-Saône, France (with the Moore Institute, NUIG, and Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Auxerre).
