WODAN project secures more INSTAR funding

postdateiconTuesday, 02 June 2009 00:00 | postauthoriconWritten by Anthony Corns | PDF | Print | E-mail

The Discovery Programme is delighted to learn that our Environmentalist, Dr Ingelise Stuijts, has been awarded €72,000 of INSTAR funding (administered by the Heritage Council) for the WODAN project ref. 16705 (for summary description of project see under Research). The money will be used to further develop a database of published and unpublished information on wood and charcoal from archaeological contexts in Ireland, in close collaboration with the members of the Irish Wood Anatomist Association (IWAA). The Discovery Programme, guided by Dr Stuijts, has been interested in such a project for a number of years but hadn’t got the financial resources to fund it ourselves. Last year an application to INSTAR resulted in an award of €33,300 which allowed the project to be initiated. This year’s larger grant will allow the project to establish itself firmly. One unexpected consequence of the undertaking of this project has been the large amount of international interest in it. Further international collaboration is expected in the coming years.
