CAA 2009 Conference
CAA 2009 Conference
Two papers on the SHARE-IT project were presented at the 37th annual Computer Applications in Archaeology (CAA) Conference held in Williamsburg, Virginia in the United States.
Robert Shaw and Anthony Corns presented separate (consecutive) papers on the SHARE-IT project. RS began with the project background, and developed the issues of archiving, standards and metadata. The Q and A at the end concentrated on specific metadata issues for geophysical survey and the open source or software options for archiving data.
In the following presentation Anthony Corns continued the SHARE-IT theme, discussing the issues of access and dissemination, broadening the paper to consider the needs for spatial data infrastructure (SDI) for archaeology and cultural heritage. Q and A focussed on the issue of metadata catalogues and the need for a national approach. The other contributions to the session concentrated on developments of web applications and database integration and sharing.
Poster Session: Our poster gave us the opportunity to discuss the aims and goals of the SHARE-IT on a one to one basis with some of the delegates. Including James Wilson form James Madison University, Virginia who is currently investigating the use of SDI within third level education to promote the use of GI within the humanities as part of the SPLINT project. It also allowed discussion of the Discovery Programme itself, with particular interest in the examples of LiDAR and photogrammetry on the poster.
