Hill of Tara - Literary & Historical Research

The Great Book of Lecan The Hill of Tara is not simply an important prehistoric archaeological complex. Historical and mythological traditions of Tara form part of many Irish people’s understanding of the island’s history. Tara conjures up images of high-kings, of Saint Patrick defeating druids and paganism on the hill, and of Daniel O’Connell’s monster meeting held there in 1843. This attraction can be traced back through our earliest documents to the present day. The Discovery Programme’s Tara Project is an inter-disciplinary project which enables archaeologists and historians to comprehend fully the importance of this site through a thorough examination of all the evidence. The aim of the Tara Literary and Historical Project is to survey the documents in which Tara is mentioned and to construct the history of Tara from about 600 A.D. to the present century.
