Magnetic Gradiometry: Applications
Magnetic Gradiometry is the most commonly used geophysical survey technique at the Discovery Programme. Undoubtedly this is in part due to the rapid speed with which grids can be surveyed, but is also due to the types of archaeological features which it is most successful in detecting. Sub-soil remains due to burning, such as kilns, hearths and furnaces can be detected. Enclosure ditches and pits can also be identified as a result of silting with magnetic topsoil.
