Low Cost Photogrammetry Applications

Isometric view of a surface mapped using the Topcon photogrammetric system. The textural definition is one of the advantages of this system.

Excavation surface recording
The kite/balloon can be used as an elevated platform (10 – 30m) to allow the capture overlapping images of excavations. The derived orthoimages will contain far greater detail of surface texture than achieved through scanning. The derived 3D model will not be generated to such high standards so in many cases photogrammetry will be a complimentary process. The field time is considerably shorter than required for scanning so it may be an alternative if time pressure exists.

Section Surveys
Close range photogrammetry allows metrically accurate section ortho-imagery to be generated from controlled overlapping imagery.

Building Survey
Elevations can be derived photogrammetrically to compliment laser scan surveys, adding texture detail missing from the point cloud images. It can be used as a quick replacement to scanning when appropriate.
