Total Station Applications

Nikon NPL-332 total station set up for recording artefact finds positions during the Medieval Riral Settlement excavation at Tulsk, Co. Roscommon.

Excavation survey
Total station survey is the basic method of recording finds positions during excavation. Using a network of pre-coordinated Irish Grid targets the instrument is set up using the resection programme, and accurate 3D coordinates established for all finds. Other elements of the excavation process may also be recorded using the total station such as context boundaries, levels, samples etc.

Photo-control points
The DP undertakes photogrammetric processing of images e.g. building facades, section faces, and excavation trenches. Accurate control targets are surveyed using the total station measuring in reflectorless mode.

Completing GPS Surveys
A number of GPS surveying tasks will not be completed due to obstructions such as trees or high buildings. In these cases the solution is to fill the gaps using the total station.

Remote Elevation Measurement
Recording upstanding buildings and ruins may require measurement to inaccessible or dangerous locations. In these situations total stations can be operated in reflectorless mode allowing measurements to be recorded directly from building surfaces and not prisms
